A message from the Little Sisters of the Poor

Little Sisters of the Poor – San Francisco, CA

The Little Sisters of the Poor arrived in San Francisco in March 1901, taking up temporary residence at 2030 Howard Street. Edward Joseph LeBreton, one of San Francisco’s most successful businessmen of the early 1900’s, took an active interest in the Little Sisters’ work on Howard Street and provided for their Homes first in San Francisco, then in Oakland and Los Angeles.

After 124 years, the Little Sisters made the very difficult decision to leave San Francisco. It comes forth from our General Chapter in France in 2022 and is in harmony with our strategic plan aimed at strengthening our ministry and the quality of our religious and community life. Because of this dedication to the mission, the Little Sisters recognize the need to withdraw from a certain number of Homes in the United States, while at the same time dedicating our resources to much needed upgrades and reconstruction projects in others. We remain grateful for all that God has done through our ministry, and all the people who have enabled us to accomplish it.

We thank you for your steadfast support over the years. Be assured of our grateful prayers.

All contributions and bequests will continue to support our mission of caring for the elderly in our Homes. Click here to donate. Thank you for your generosity! Feel free to contact us at dvsanfran@littlesistersofthepoor.org.

For more information about our Homes or to submit prayer requests, visit our national website. We ask for your continued prayers, through the intercession of our foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan, for religious freedom, and the protection of life from conception until natural death.
