Our Old Kentucky Home welcomes Mother General

By May 5, 2026No Comments

Mother Maria and her traveling companions missed the Kentucky Derby by just one day, but they did stop by Churchill Downs on their way to the home in Louisville on Sunday, May 3. They arrived mid-afternoon and were greeted in several languages. It seems we have Spanish and French speakers in all of our homes!

The next day Archbishop Shelton Fabre celebrated the Eucharist at the home, along with priest friends Fr. Ronald Knott and Fr. Bill Hammer. Entertainment provided by the Residents and staff included a performance of My Old Kentucky Home by the Bell Choir, a brief play recounting the founding of the home in Louisville and a realistic presentation of the Kentucky Derby! The real bugler from Churchill Downs played the call to the post, retired jockey Charlie Woods (whose mother is a Resident in the Home) called the race, and Resident “jockeys” Pat Jakubiak and Colleen Powell rode wooden horses on wheels from the start to the finish line.
